School Culture

Equality Charter School's school culture is positive and supportive. The use of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) gives Equality staff the framework to create a culture that will articulate, teach, and reinforce the expectations. PBIS emphasizes a school-wide system of support that includes proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create a positive school environment. In many schools, school-wide discipline has focused mainly on reacting to specific student misbehavior by implementing punishment-based strategies. Research has shown that the implementation of punishment, especially when it is used inconsistently and in the absence of other positive strategies, is ineffective. Introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important part of a student's educational experience. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding. The purpose of school-wide PBIS at Equality is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.

All Staff have high expectations for all students because high expectations are a foundation for a positive, supportive learning environment.
